MAJ Mathew Wade Worrell

Major Mathew Wade Worrell died May 14, 2006 in Iraq when his AH-6M Helicopter was shot down by enemy fire during combat operations.
He was born April 4, 1972 and attended high school in Dallas, Texas.  He graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree and received his commission in 1995 as a Second Lieutenant.  In 1996 he attended the Aviation Officer Basic Course and Initial Entry Rotary Wing training. 
After receiving an OH-58D Aviator Qualification in 1997, he was ordered to Fort Hood, Texas where he served as an Assistant S-3 in Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment.  Later in his tour with the 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment he served as a Platoon Leader attached to SFOR 5 (Task Force Eagle) and deployed to Bosnia. 


Returning from Bosnia in 1999, he attended the Military Intelligence Captain’s Career Course at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona followed by the Combined Arms Services Staff School at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas.  Upon completing school he was assigned in 2001 to the 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky where he served as the commander for A Troop, 2nd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment.   He assessed for the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) in 2003 and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 160th SOAR(A) where he served as a Flight Operations Officer and later as a Platoon Leader in B Company, 1st Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne).


MAJ Worrell’s schools include the SERE (High Risk), Airborne school, and Air Assault school.  His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star (1OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal (Numeral 3), the Air Medal with Valor, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal (1OLC), the National Defense Service Medal (Bronze Star), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, the Combat Action Badge, the Senior Aviator Badge, the Airborne Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.  He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, Meritorious Service Medal (1OLC), and the Purple Heart.


MAJ Worrell is survived by his wife, Camille of Clarksville, TN and two children, Jake and Luke.
